“We really wanted to challenge ourselves to use real apartments,” said Amy Singer, IKEA’s communication and interior design manager. I appreciated the well-styled collection of some of IKEA’s best items, as well as the “apartments” (furnished exclusively with IKEA pieces) that skip the usual model-home gloss in order to address problems that many New Yorkers are all too familiar with (think: a bathtub in the bedroom). The studio helps solve that struggle with lots of small-space inspiration and personalized design help. The hardest part of an IKEA trip is figuring out which of its thousands of items will work best in your particular space. ![]() But if you’re often overwhelmed in an IKEA store, you’ll likely find the Planning Studio much more manageable. The 17,000-square-foot Planning Studio is impressive, but it shows only a small portion of IKEA’s thousands of offerings (in comparison, the nearby Brooklyn IKEA is 346,000 square feet), and it doesn’t sell anything on site. On April 15, IKEA launches its Planning Studio, a showroom and design service in midtown Manhattan (more cities coming soon), with the goal of helping New Yorkers make the most of their notoriously tiny homes. But if you live in New York City, you now have an alternative. As every IKEA shopper knows, to stock up on budget Swedish basics you must trek to the big blue warehouse, brave large crowds, and schlep home, boxes in tow.
